Rogge hails IOC’s environmental credentials

DOHA, Qatar (AP & staff) — IOC President Jacques Rogge says environmental sustainability remains a key part of the Olympic movement and will continue to be through the 2012 and 2016 games.

Rogge told the World Conference of Sports and Environment on Sunday that the IOC’s “commitment to the environment is more than just a matter of self-interest. It is a matter of values.”

He said efforts to make the Olympics more sustainable started with the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer and have continued through the 2010 games in Vancouver that “set a new standard for environmental sustainability in construction practices, energy conservation and legacy planning.”

The three-day meeting in Doha aims to find ways sporting events can reduce their environmental impact.
