US picks up 2 more golds in rowing at Pan Am Games

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP & staff) — The United States picked up two more gold medals in rowing Wednesday at the Pan American Games. Jennifer Goldsack won the women’s single sculls before the men’s eights claimed the last of the five golds available in the early session. The U.S. leads the medals table with 26 gold and 66 medals overall. Brazil is next with 10 gold and 31 overall. Cuba also won two gold medals in rowing, taking the titles in the men’s single sculls and the men’s lightweight coxless fours, while Argentina won the women’s quadruple sculls. There were 13 more gold medals on the program for Day 5 at the Pan American Games, including five in the swimming pool. Team sports — including soccer, baseball, handball and field hockey — were also on the schedule, while women’s beach volleyball entered the quarterfinal stage. Goldsack, who also competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, took control in the second half of her race and won in 7 minutes, 48.77 seconds. Fabiana Beltrame of Brazil was second. Derek Johnson, Jason Read, Robert Otto, Joseph Spencer, Stephen Kasprzyk, Blaise Didier, Matthew Wheeler, Michael Gennaro and cox Marcus McElhenney won the final rowing gold medal of the Pan American Games. Argentina finished the three-day rowing competition with five gold medals, one more than the Americans.

Irmiger of US wins 1st gold at Pan Am Games

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP & staff) — The United States quickly moved to the top of the medals standings at the Pan American Games on Saturday, with Heather Irmiger winning the competition’s first gold in the women’s cross-country mountain bike race. There are 10 more gold medals to be won on the first day of competition in Guadalajara, including five in the swimming pool. Laura Lorenza Morfin of Mexico took silver in the mountain bike race, and Amanda Mae-Ling Sin of Canada was third.
